The Curious case of Deepawli Maharaj!

When I got my car, I was advised by "N" number of people to not buy it on Saturday. Apparently, it is not " shubh " to buy Metal/Iron on a Saturday. Buying a car is considered to be a very big thing in our part of the world, and no one takes chances with these things. With so many people advising me against it, it just made my resolve stronger to buy it on a Saturday come what may! And, Saturday it was when I finally bought the car! Two years on, I dont think I have been cursed. Coming to the main point of discussion - There is a guy who comes every Saturday in our colony, and calls himself "Shani Maharaj". Rings door bells, and people generously give him money, Mustard Oil and various other things - which mostly includes things made of Iron. He wears Black Jeans, Black Shirt, white Sports shoes and carries a "Dolu" which has the Mustard Oil and the coins he collects from people. I wonder, what does he do with that Oil. I am curious a...

When did you start drinking - Part 2

Image
Most of the times, when the room mates were enjoying a drink - I used to be the cook, making anda bhurji and the 'chai' after the drink. It contnued that way for a few months. It was just an occasional beer, or a peg on some occasion - until an evening at a friend's house in Mysore. The years after that have not been same, they just could not have been. Then began a phase which had many memorable experiences - good or bad, I don't know, but experiences for sure. Sitting at 11 PM and stopping at 6AM, just two friends - chatting through the night. The bread omlette at 3 AM. An Indica car, and Jayadeva flyover. A Friday night, and then a Sunday morning. 7 AM craziness - the bus ride, the onsite call and the nap in the washroom to follow that up.3 Months of non-stop craziness, without a weekend to spare. I think I have seen it all. That was a phase, and I am happy it was just that - a phase. The stock we thought would last us for a couple of weeks, but was over in a ...

When did you start drinking? - Part 1

A few days back I was reading an article about 'Drinking'. The first line from the article read - "It’s an exciting day when you turn 18 or 21 and get to consume your first adult beverage legally" That just made me think, when was the first time I tasted alcohol? It was at a dinner - my Manager had come to India from US. We all went out for dinner, and if I remember correctly - that was the first time I tasted Beer. But it was nothing like I had expected. You see in movies, people going out, drinking, laughing and enjoying - it was nothing like that. We sat, drank a few beers, and left for home. By the time I reached home, my head was spinning a little bit, and I just slept. Next morning, it was all normal. There was nothing extraordinary. It sometimes amazes me, that until 3-4 years back I had never even touched alcohol. During, college I was pretty sure that i will never drink. At least, not with the money of my parents. And, I am very proud of that fact - that I...

So, it’s 26 th Jan, and I am back again! Wish you a very Happy Republic Day everyone. After a brief spell of somewhat regular posts , I am back to my usual lazy self. It’s been more than 3 months and I haven’t posted anything. But today (rather tomorrow, I am posting this a day earlier) being 26 th Jan, or “ Chabbi Janvary ” as many of my regular readers know it as .. he he(Damn! I am missing the Whatsapp Smileys), now as the ritual stands, I feel obliged to write a post. And, contrary to the recent past, I am not writing this post with a topic in my mind. Let’s begin! My Plans for tomorrow – Jaipur ahoy! It’s the annual Jaipur Literature Fest. And, like last year we are going again. No, I don’t have any particular interest in this festival; it’s just the Long Drive which I cherish. Last year, it was the Coke Studio which made us make a plan, this year again we are going aiwein hee :p Ofcourse it’s the Coke Studio too, and a good weekend getaway. And, ...

"Going Home for Diwali"

Image
October - Yes, the festive season is near. In the morning, when you wake up there is a cool breeze that is blowing. You slowly try to ease your way out of the bed and crawl into the bathroom for the shower, only to turn the shower On and stand next to it trying to muster up the courage to get into it. The water is cold, and you are probably too embarassed to start using the Water Heater, yet. You wait until you realize that you are getting late for office and then dash into the shower and out of it as quickly. So, the hot and humid summers are gone. In the evening there is a very pleasent fragnance from the flowers on the trees. That pleasent smell (for lack of a better word) reminds you that the festive season is here. Diwali is coming soon! Suddenly, you have a smile on your face. There are a countless feelings which you feel during this time of the year. It is a sort of a high you wait for, all year long. There is an old Maruti Suzuki advertisement which starts coming every y...

"Those were the best days of my lives"

No, the post is not going to be what the title may have suggested at first. It's a little different. With the advent of Facebook culture, you now know who has just lived the 'Best days of their Lives'. I know people, who have just finished college and are talking about how these 4/3 years were the best days of their lives and they are going to miss it so much. I have also been part of this, I remember how it felt when college got over for me. Its a very similar flow of emotions which you see very often when a phase/period of life ends. The phase/period I am talking here is like college getting over, school getting over, change of city/country etc. You can see how people get senti about it, worried about losing touch with friends, anxious about how life is going to be from that moment onwards, emotional about the good times and tensed that Life is not going to be same ever again. But, what is common amongst all of them is that these same people would have said exactly the...

Last Day Emails - Part 2

Image
Below is the last day email, I sent when I left Infy - Subject - See you soon Let me try and keep it short and crisp. From Mysore to Bangalore and then to Chandigarh - I now move back to Delhi, leaving Infosys after a short stint of about 4 years. It is just my co-ordinates which are changing, I stay the same.   It took me 2 attempts to get into Infosys. Well, it took me 2 attempts to get out too. :) For the first attempt - around 35 from our class in college sat for the Infy recruitment drive – 7 cleared the written, and out of them only 1 was rejected in the Interview. I was the one, probably not good enough as somebody judged. What all happened in between those two attempts is a long story, and what happened after I cleared in the second attempt is an even longer story, so won’t get into those details J. Nearly 4 years in Infy, Just One project, Lots of great memories (well, some not-so-great too – but I’ll take those in my stride), I met some wonde...
